The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.

Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory against Fleetwood.

Final Round Excitement

Rai entered the last day with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood edged one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final green.

Playoff Decider

This set up a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better person. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” stated the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it is. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”

Notable Performances

The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, finishing one shot short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under closing round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an superb final-round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
