Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the initial candidates under consideration to replace the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend following the squad's 10-match without a victory beginning to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the club - are among the options to be considered by the club leadership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton manager - who played over a century of games for Wolves during his time as a player - is considered a strong contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves board as they begin the process of appointing a fresh head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a shock choice given he was released by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham midfielder is out of work which means the club would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
