European Cup Fixtures This Evening: Chelsea v Barcelona & More

Group Rankings

It's the midway point of the group phase, meaning the standings is starting to take shape. All six English sides are presently in the top 12, but there are only two pts between 5th and 16th place, so there's a whiff of uncertainty about the entire situation. It’s all up for grabs.

Historical Context

The only previous meeting involving Marseille and Newcastle was the Uefa Cup semifinal of 2004, claimed by an emerging star from Côte d'Ivoire. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have never met before. Chelsea and Barcelona have a peedie bit of history.

Initial Game Reports

Only a single goal during the opening period of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute strike has given Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a 1-0 advantage away to the Dutch side.

Marseille v Newcastle Preview

Although The Magpies traveled to the French south fresh from their confidence-boosting 2-1 home English top-flight win against Manchester City on the weekend, and having defeated Union SG, the Portuguese side and Athletic Bilbao in the European Cup, their sole on the road victory since early April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.

Not that Eddie Howe was eager to talk about the mental side of this away form issue. “The Champions League is different to Premier League games,” said the coach, whose side are 6th in the European table, with nine points from a possible 12 and automatic qualification to the knockout phase almost within touching distance. “I don’t know if you can compare them.”

A dedicated live feed is available for Chelsea v Barcelona. Murray, the minute-by-minute equivalent of Maradona is handling for that.
