A massive Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.

The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages outlets domestically and internationally.

"The first tuna signals fortune," commented the business owner, a notable figure at the annual first sale.

Dubbed the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is famous for placing high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.

Auction Shock and Historic Precedent

Following the auction, the winner admitted to the press that he was "astonished at the final price," stating, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price soared in no time."

This most recent acquisition exceeds his own notable purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Even after once saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to break his own record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously known for exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which stated the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.

The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was quickly sliced up for patrons at the winner's sushi chains shortly after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've begun the year in a good way after tasting something so auspicious as the year starts," said one elated customer.
